Keeping It Warm and Cozy
It’s important to maintain the proper working order of your heating system. Often, simple but essential service and maintenance can keep your heaters in good working order and ensure you get the most out of them. Below are 3 of the most important heating systems service and maintenance tasks that your heater should receive at least once every year.
Checking belts
Blower or heater belts wear out over time, and if they are not replaced, they will start to slip or become damaged. One end of the belt wraps around the pulleys and the other around the driven arm. Every time you turn on your heater, the belts will turn the blower wheel and the driven pulley, which in turn, rotate the heater’s element. Replace belts as needed. To check if your heating system belts need replacing, open the door of your heater. If the belt’s not turning, you’ll have to replace it.
Checking your gas lines
One way to check if your gas lines have been leaking is by smelling them. If you notice a gasoline odor in your home, then you have a gas leak. A leak in your gas lines will result in a heater that does not get hot or works irregularly. One way to ensure your heating system is ready to work is to check the gas lines. This can be done by smelling the gas line or by using a gas leak detection device. If you notice a gas leak, call your gas company or a gas technician to check it out.
Replacing your thermostat
It’s a good idea to check your thermostat monthly. It should be in good condition and the batteries should be at the right levels. If your thermostat is at the right temperature, but the heater does not work, you have a problem with your thermostat. Replace your thermostat if it is more than three years old. If this isn’t the problem, check its wiring.
